How Do Dental Crowns Work?

Tooth decay can result in pain, discomfort, and difficulty in conducting normal oral activities such as eating, talking, or smiling confidently. Not only that, but cavities can also lead to infections and major oral health issues.

Here at Wailuku Dental Group in Wailuku, HI, our dentists, Dr. Heather Hearon, Dr. Catherine Vargas, and Dr. Jonathan Lau, commonly utilize dental crowns for treating cavities, saving teeth from extraction, and preventing further damage to affected teeth.

How Do Dental Crowns Work?

Dental crowns are caps that are customized to match the tooth’s shape and cover a damaged tooth. They can repair your tooth’s strength, shape, size, and even enhance its appearance. There are various reasons why you may require a dental crown, such as:

  • To protect or reinforce a weakened tooth due to decay or breakage.
  • To adhere parts of a cracked tooth.
  • To provide support for a tooth with a big filling if there isn’t much tooth structure remaining.
  • To repair a broken or immensely worn down or decayed tooth.
  • To cover a stained or crooked tooth.
  • To support a dental bridge in position.
  • To cover an implant and give it a shape similar to that of your tooth and form for functionality.
  • For aesthetic purposes, if you have a strangely-shaped tooth for instance.

What Happens During the Procedure?

In general, the procedure for placing dental crowns will involve the following and will be completed within two dental appointments with your dentist here in Wailuku, HI. Here is the list of steps you can expect:

  • Your dentist will examine and prep the affected tooth that requires a crown. Getting X-rays and a mold of your tooth will also be performed.
  • Your dentist will then buff the outer layer of your tooth.
  • An impression will be created for the altered tooth and teeth around it.
  • In the meantime, a temporary crown will be placed on your tooth for protection.
  • An impression will be provided to the lab that will design and produce the crown. This can take about a week or two.
  • Once the crown is prepared for your second appointment, your dentist will place the permanent crown over your tooth.
